Getting To Know Hungrybear Gaming 

Comparasino speaks to Justin Chamberlain, Hungrybear Gaming Founder and CEO, to get the inside line on its flagship title, SlotMasters, the first truly multiplayer slot game. 

You might think that multiplayer online casino games are something new, but Hungrybear Gaming launched the very first multiplayer slot, SlotMasters, almost a decade ago. 

Since then, the studio has grown its portfolio to include more than 40 slots and a selection of table games, but SlotMasters remains its flagship title. 

To learn more about SlotMasters and the challenges Hungrybear Gaming faced in bringing it to market, we sat down with the studio’s Founder and CEO, Justin Chamberlain.  

Hungrybear Gaming – tell us everything we need to know about the game studio in a couple of sentences.

Hungrybear Gaming is a boutique-but-ambitious studio pushing the boundaries of casino entertainment, bringing social, multiplayer, real-time mechanics into a world historically built on solitary RNG play. Built on creativity and a willingness to challenge convention, the studio blends traditional casino familiarity (RTP, maths, reels) with next-gen engagement, social play and multiplayer competition.

SlotMasters is the world’s first multiplayer slot game. Where did the idea for the game come from? 

SlotMasters was first conceived over a decade ago, at the height of the social casino boom led by the likes of Double Down, Playtika and Zynga, alongside the rise of global multiplayer franchises like Call of Duty, Minecraft and Fortnite. The concept was straightforward: take the social, competitive, community-driven gameplay younger audiences grew up with and bring it into the slot world, which had remained almost entirely single-player for decades. My own kids knew nothing except multiplayer gaming, and it became clear that as this generation matured into gamblers, they would expect the same social connectivity and competitive dopamine casino products had never offered.

Just how challenging was it to combine multiplayer game play with the casino/slot game format?

Brutal in the most rewarding way. Traditional slot engines are built for one player per machine, with isolated RNG, predictable maths and no need for synchronisation. Introducing multiplayer required re-thinking everything: concurrency, server load, fairness, latency tolerance, state sync across thousands of players and still maintaining a compliant, consistent, fair, rewarding and ultimately profitable game for the house. The result is a hybrid that behaves like a social game on the surface, yet runs like a regulated slot engine underneath. One of the hardest things we’ve ever done, but worth every headache.

Talk us through the game play and what the player experience looks like – how do players win?

This is how SlotMasters is played. 

– Players enter a lobby, choose their stake and risk level
-Each player is matched with two real opponents (no manual selection, no player collusion)
-When all three hit Play, they enter the Prize Wheel
-The Prize Wheel determines the game’s prize – fully configurable by the online casino in the back-office
-Operators can define 1-10 prizes, each with custom weighting. For example:
 • Prize 1 = 2.5x stake at 96% frequency
 • Prize 10 = 10,000x stake at 0.001% frequency
-Once the prize is decided, all three players enter a fast-paced two-minute battle
-The base gameplay is pure base-game slot spinning – no bonus rounds – with players earning points on standard win lines
-Landing a bonus symbol awards the weapons chest, which players deploy strategically to disrupt rivals, freeze rivals and steal points
-Everyone has access to the same weapons and number of weapons (ensuring player fairness)
-The winner is the player with the most points at the end

Winning is part slot luck, part tactical play and part psychological warfare. Outsmarting two opponents is as satisfying as winning the payout itself.

Does SlotMasters appeal to fans of traditional slot games, or more next-gen players used to mobile gaming? 

Both players at once, hopefully. Traditional players get the familiar maths, lines and slot feel, while next-gen mobile gamers get what the slots industry has lacked for years – competition, community and live opponents.
