Inside Peter & Sons: Redefining UK Slots with Yann Bautista

As tightening regulations reshape the UK’s online casino landscape, we sit down with Yann Bautista, Co-founder and Commercial Director at Peter & Sons, to discuss how hand-crafted artwork, high-volatility mechanics and smart compliance are driving the next generation of online slots.

In an online casino market increasingly dominated by predictable themes and endless math clones, Armenia-based studio Peter & Sons has built a fierce reputation as the ultimate industry disruptor.

Boasting a signature, hand-crafted aesthetic that feels more like a premium indie video game than a traditional slot grid, the developer is proving that there is still a massive appetite for genuine originality. But how does a studio built on bold artistry and high-octane volatility navigate a UK market currently defined by tightening guardrails and a demand for casual entertainment?

We caught up with Yann Bautista, Co-founder and Commercial Director at Peter & Sons, to find out exactly how the studio is tuning its unique DNA for British players.

Peter & Sons has a visual style that looks more like a high-end graphic novel or indie video game than a traditional slot. When you’re designing characters like those in the latest release The Soapranos, are you specifically targeting a new generation of players who grew up on video games rather than classic fruit machines?

Our roots have a big influence on the way we create games. Most of the founders come from a broader game development background rather than traditional slot development, so bringing that mindset into the casino space was something we wanted to do from day one.

The visual language around players has changed. People have grown up with video games, comics and rich storytelling, and they quickly notice whether a game has a real world behind it or is just another generic slot.

That’s why one of Peter & Sons’ biggest strengths is our visual identity. We give our artists the freedom to bring their own style and imagination into each project, so every game feels handcrafted and has its own personality.

Naturally, that resonates with players looking for something beyond a traditional slot experience. They want memorable characters, original themes and worlds with real personality. We still build games for every slot player, but we believe great mechanics become even stronger when they’re paired with distinctive art and storytelling.

UK players are seeing a lot of generic reskins in the market lately. How much of a priority is it for the studio to ensure every new release features entirely bespoke assets and a unique narrative universe rather than recycled artwork?

It’s a huge priority for us. The market is becoming increasingly saturated, so simply releasing more games isn’t enough anymore. Every new title has to give players a reason to notice it and remember it.

At Peter & Sons, every game is built as its own universe, with bespoke artwork, characters and a distinct identity. That’s a core part of our philosophy. We want each release to feel like a new experience, not just another variation of something players have already seen.

That doesn’t mean we never build on successful concepts. We love creating sequels and expanding worlds that players already know and enjoy. But even then, every new title has to stand on its own, bringing fresh mechanics, new ideas and its own personality rather than feeling like a simple reskin.

In a market full of content, we believe originality is one of the few ways to create games that players remember and operators genuinely want to promote.

Your games are often celebrated for their high volatility. For a casual UK player who might be intimidated by that profile, which of your titles serves as the best entry point where the entertainment value and hit rate balance out the risk?

It’s true that Peter & Sons has become well known for high-volatility games, but that’s largely a reflection of the markets where we’ve traditionally been strongest. Different markets have different player preferences and regulatory frameworks, and our portfolio has naturally evolved around that.

The UK is a great example. It’s a highly regulated market with a different player experience, so we’ve been expanding our portfolio with a broader mix of mechanics and volatility profiles to better suit those audiences.

If someone is discovering Peter & Sons for the first time, I’d probably recommend one of our latest Hold & Win titles, such as Roman Glory Hold & Win or Big Bounty Bandits Three Pots. They feature a more familiar gameplay style and medium volatility, while still delivering the creativity, visual identity and attention to detail that define our games.

Roman Glory Hold & Win – Peter & Sons

For us, volatility isn’t what defines a Peter & Sons game. It’s simply one element of the design. What matters most is creating a memorable and entertaining experience, whatever the mechanic or volatility level.

While direct bonus buys have been banned in the UK for years, alternative mechanics like Golden Bets or Ante Bets, which let players pay a small premium on their stake to increase their natural bonus scatter chances, are very popular. With the UK’s ongoing focus on tightening spin intensity, how do you design these booster features to keep them rewarding while remaining fully compliant?

Every market has its own regulatory requirements, and we design our games with those in mind from the start. Rather than trying to fit the same experience everywhere, we adapt our mechanics to suit each market.

In the UK, where certain features aren’t permitted, we focus on creating engaging gameplay within those boundaries. Features like our Golden Bet are a good example – they give players a way to enhance the experience while remaining fully compliant.

At the end of the day, it’s about finding the right balance between innovation, entertainment and regulation.

With the UK market embracing a 10x wagering requirement cap on bonuses, players are becoming much more sensitive to game math and transparency. Has this regulatory shift changed how studios design core math models or bonus structures?

Not really. We don’t design our games around promotional mechanics or wagering requirements. Our focus has always been on creating games that are engaging, transparent and enjoyable on their own.

Game math is just one part of the overall experience. It has to work together with the mechanics, volatility, pacing and gameplay to create something that feels balanced and entertaining. Regulation reinforces the importance of getting that balance right, but it hasn’t fundamentally changed the way we approach game design.

Ultimately, if players clearly understand what they’re playing and enjoy the experience, that’s a win for everyone.

You recently celebrated going live across Rank Interactive’s major UK brands. Does designing for legacy UK facing operators change how you think about game distribution or player preferences compared to newer global markets?

Working with leading operators like Rank is always valuable because they have a deep understanding of their players and operate in one of the world’s most mature markets.

Every market teaches you something, and the UK is no exception. What we’ve learned there has helped us better understand how different player profiles engage with our games. Those insights don’t just apply to the UK, they’re often relevant across many regulated markets.

At the same time, we never lose sight of who we are. A Peter & Sons game should always feel like a Peter & Sons game. The challenge in a market like the UK isn’t to shout louder than everyone else, but to stand out through quality, originality and a strong identity.

If you could pick one game from your current portfolio or upcoming roadmap that you believe will become a permanent fixture in a UK player’s “Favorites” folder, which one is it and why?

That’s a difficult one! Every game has its own personality, so it really depends on what kind of player you are.

If you want to experience the Peter & Sons DNA, I’d definitely recommend titles like Barbarossa, Ghostfather or Greedy Alice. They represent the creativity, storytelling and distinctive style that have helped define our studio over the years.

But if I had to look ahead, I’d probably point to our latest Hold & Win releases, such as Roman Glory Hold & Win and Big Bounty Bandits Three Pots. They combine more familiar mechanics with our own creative twist, and I think they’ll resonate particularly well with UK players.

Ultimately, that’s the direction we’re excited about – continuing to build on what makes Peter & Sons unique while expanding our portfolio with experiences that appeal to an even broader audience.

We are seeing a major convergence of slots and social gaming formats across the UK. Does Peter & Sons have any interest in bringing your signature hand-crafted art style to the online bingo or Slingo spaces to disrupt those traditional verticals?

It’s not something that’s currently in our roadmap. Right now, our focus is on continuing to grow and innovate within the slot space.

That said, we’re always open to exploring new formats if we believe we can bring something genuinely different to them. We wouldn’t move into bingo or Slingo just by putting Peter & Sons artwork on top of an existing formula. If we ever decided to enter those verticals, it would have to feel like a true Peter & Sons experience.

Whatever we create, it has to carry the same DNA: original ideas, handcrafted worlds and a strong visual identity. That’s much more important to us than the format itself.
